Two Authors share their experiences with show business

Main Street Books hosts a very special event on September 21st, 6:00pm.

Charles Long thrilled opera audiences for over two decades, performing on some of America's and the world's most famous stages and singing alongside some of the medium's greatest stars. Now retired, Long vividly recounts many of those experiences in "Adventures in the Scream Trade: Scenes from an Operatic Life," his insightful, frank, and humorous memoir. Sparing no one, especially himself, from his acerbic wit and keen observations, he sheds a bright light into a world many of us respect and admire but few of us have ever encountered in such intimate detail. In the process he illustrates why the word "opera," which means "work" in Italian, truly is a labor of love for so many who have given their all to their art.

Penny Orloff was a working actor/dancer in LA when a Juilliard scholarship took her to New York. She had featured roles on Broadway, working for such directors as Harold Prince and Joseph Papp; and sang more than 20 Principal Soprano roles for New York City Opera, under Julius Rudel and Beverly Sills. In a 50+ year career, she starred in over 100 productions off-Broadway, regionally, and on tour. She reviews theatre, symphony, dance and chamber music locally for a variety of print and online outlets. Her novel, "Jewish Thighs on Broadway" was adapted into a solo show of the same name which toured the US for a decade, including a successful off-Broadway run in 2005.

The two met at New York City Opera on the cast of Carmen.

Storytime Saturdays!

It has been a longtime dream to offer Storytime at Main Street Books, and it's finally coming true. Miss Kathy, who has been favorite children's librarian at local libraries for decades, has graciously agreed to read Saturdays at 1:00PM. All ages welcome!

TUBOB: Two Years in West Africa with the Peace Corps

We had a fascinating talk with Mary Trimble on August 22nd. If you missed it, we've still got copies available of her memoir, "Tubob" and her novels.

Under New Ownership!

On September 1st, 2012, Main Street Books was purchased by Emily Newman from Carnation. She will be running the bookstore with the support of her mother, Darcy, who is a librarian with the King County Library System. They are very grateful to Amanda for this opportunity, and to Karl for his hard work and dedication to the bookstore.

Please email emily@mainstbooksmonroe.com with any questions, and drop in to say hello!

Susan Wingate Speaks at Monroe Library!
